  • Good Times, Bad Times

And by “bad” times I mean “ok” times. We’ll get the ok stuff out of the way first. I went to an event yesterday that I helped organize. It was part of my alma mater’s reunion festivities – a combined live and silent auction (I didn’t “win” anything, I’m sorry to say). It was a […]

  • Support the Peace Corps!

This post is waaaay off topic (although I do plan to have more related posts updated soon!). Update: I should mention that Erin’s blog (link further down the post) has plenty of food descriptions! (sort of related!). As I’ve mentioned before, my friend, Erin, is in the Peace Corps, serving in Moldova. She has just […]

  • Nitrates could cause cancer

Here’s a link to the article: http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20100802/ts_alt_afp/healthusfoodcancermeat The article states that increased nitrate and nitrite consumption ups N-nitroso compounds which cause tumors. It says that people (in this particular study) who consumed the most nitrates and nitrite compounds had a 28 or 29% higher chance of developing bladder cancer. They specifically point out that these […]

  • EBC

Bob and I went out to dinner Saturday night to celebrate our anniversary. We decided to go to the Ellicottville Brewing Company (EBC, to those in the know), in Ellicottville, NY. We’d had a couple of dates in E’ville before, so it’s something of a favorite. This weekend was also the Jazz Fest; there was […]

  • It’s Perspective

My friend is home from the Peace Corps for a short while. She’s serving in Moldova (look it up). Amidst her stories of the confusion and growing pains of a young nation trying to distance itself from the not-that-past-tense specter of the Soviet Republic while being an oft-conquored bit of land (about the size of […]

  • Quick note

It’s been a few days since my last post, but I’ve had good reason! We’ve been doing a lot of work on our house (like replacing the stairs to the second floor – which freaked out the dogs – and putting in a new counter top / butcher block), so I have actually been eating […]

  • Dinner tonight

Dinner tonight: simple summer pasta. Egg noodles with summer squash, a carrot, and broccoli. While the pasta was cooking, I heated up olive oil and then quickly cooked the veggies over medium high heat. Lots of flavor, lots of crunch!

  • Date Night

We love to go on dates. Just taking little slices of life to concentrate just on each other and have some shared experiences. Sometimes they’re pretty simple, dinner and drinks, and sometimes they’re a bit more elaborate. They usually involve food. Friday (and Saturday) we had a more elaborate date. The only really elaborate part […]

  • The Best Part

The best part of volunteering, besides the feel good aspect of helping out, is the snacks. I think we all know this. As an omnivore, man oh man, the world is your oyster. When you have food limitations (and with a natural and unfortunate allergy to walnuts, I actually have a real food limitation — […]

  • Healthy Food is a Right, Not a Privilege

I just listened to a podcast from the American Museum of Natural History (http://www.amnh.org/science podcasts are available at the bottom of the page, and in iTunes). The speaker was Michael Pollan (check out his bibliography!) and he spoke about why corporate food production isn’t sustainable (for example, if everyone in America wants to eat 8 […]
