We are actively looking to fill quite a few roles at work, but the one I can talk about with some knowledge is my own role – Happiness Engineer.
I have the priviledge of working with such an amazing cross-section of smart, motivated, creative people. And within the Happiness division, we take our work very seriously (with a large measure of joy).
We look for the best in the world, which could well be you.
I have to be honest, however, that it’s quite an adjustment, particularly if you’ve never worked from home before. The flexibility and trust that goes with this career is a heady and humbling brew. You’ll need to be really strict with yourself – it’s so easy to do just one more ticket, one more chat, and to work after hours; just to catch up, just to read a little bit more. It’s tempting to work around the clock. And since Automattic is a start-up with people literally all over the globe, there is plenty of opportunity to log in and chat with peers and tackle problems at all hours. But as I said, this is a career – we are in it for the long haul. It’s a marathon, not a sprint! And so you need to pace yourself.
Read our creed. Does it resonate with you?
I will never stop learning. I won’t just work on things that are assigned to me. I know there’s no such thing as a status quo. I will build our business sustainably through passionate and loyal customers. I will never pass up an opportunity to help out a colleague, and I’ll remember the days before I knew everything. I am more motivated by impact than money, and I know that Open Source is one of the most powerful ideas of our generation. I will communicate as much as possible, because it’s the oxygen of a distributed company. I am in a marathon, not a sprint, and no matter how far away the goal is, the only way to get there is by putting one foot in front of another every day. Given time, there is no problem that’s insurmountable.
