Automattic Anniversary

A year ago was my official start date at Automattic. The past year has been the fastest yet. I’ve never been as happy as I have since joining Automattic – finally I am as content at work as I am with everything else in my life; it was the missing component.

As I was reflecting on what to write today, looking back over the past year (and the weeks before when I was on my trial), one thing really stood out to me.

The guy on the left.

During my trial (all Happiness Engineers work on a trial basis for 4-6 weeks to get a feel for the job, to see if it’s something they will be able to do day in and day out, and to see if the culture is right for them), Bob unconditionally supported me. He never wavered in his confidence that I would be offered a job. He tended the babies every night for four weeks while I worked. All that while he simultaneously worked full time, coached college cross-country, and went to school (3 courses a semester) towards his degree in civil engineering.

And since then, he’s taken care of the twins when I go on work trips to fun locations, making do with Skyping and FaceTime.

Fortunately, we’ve also been able to spend more time together as a family, taking extended weekend trips to nearby locations and longer trips halfway across the country. And we hope to combine some of the meetup trips next year with mini-vacations for the two of us.

All the while, he remains the funnest dad ever:

So I think it is no exaggeration to say that my success at Automattic is due in very large part to my husband and the amazing support he gives me everyday. As I think back over the past year, Bob is in every frame, either holding me up or doing some little thing that makes my life immeasurably better. He’s also done some very big things, like building an addition onto our house that gives us a ton more living (and sliding – see video) space.

I think I’ll go get him an anniversary present. We can all agree that he’s more than earned it!

  1. The only thing I don’t like about this post is that it made me realize I don’t tell my husband enough how much I appreciate his efforts to help make my Automattic work life a success. I’ll go do that right now.

Glad to have you on the team and congrats on a fantastic year!
